Join Deirdre O Connor during Wired and tired?:
From the dawn of time we have been biologically hardwired for sleep but something is clearly going wrong with our in-built sleep wiring as almost one-in-five of us are spending the night tossing and turning. In this interactive session we will explore what is keeping us awake – and more importantly what we can do to help get ourselves back on track so that our sleep becomes what it was always meant to be – deep, restorative and restful. As a recovered insomniac Deirdre knows this territory too well and will take you through the best sleep practices that are out there so that you too can find your way back to a full nights blissful sleep.
Learn more about Deirdre:
Deirdre O Connor is an Integrative Sleep Therapist and founder of the Deep Sleep Clinic in DunLaoghaire where she works exclusively with clients to help them find their way back to soothing, restful and nourishing sleep. She has trained extensively , over the past 25 years, in sleep-inducing methods and techniques and regularly runs classes and workshops in her one-of-a-kind method.
Deep Sleep is a beautiful cross-pollination:
Neuro-Sensory Movement, Body Mapping, Craniosacral Unwinding, Stillness, Bed-time Yoga, Mindful Somatic Release, and most of all – letting go, slowing down, unplugging and breathing deep belly breaths.
Deirdre’s studies were triggered by a need to find a relief from on-going anxiety and began with Yoga – initially in India for almost 3 years exploring many different Yoga styles – Hatha, Bhakti, Jhana and Karma Yoga. She went on to train in Meditation and Buddhist Philosophy, living in Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, Thai forest retreat centres and Yogic ashrams in Rishikesh. During that time she undertook many intensive 10-day silent meditation retreats over the years, and wishing to take her practice deeper, undertook three separate meditation retreats of over 3-months duration, one of which was under the guidance of teachers of the Dalai Lama. In 2013 she created and developed her Deep Sleep Workshops and Trainings. This was initially in response to her own experience of restless, sleepless nights, and wanting to find a way through them without resorting to sleep medication.
‘ Although Yoga was a great help in slowing down it just wasn’t enough for my body to switch off so I started to look around to see what else might help. I began my training in Clinical Somatics which looks at re-training our neuro-muscular response to stress and finding new ways to respond which don’t trigger anxiety. This helped me hugely as it gave me solid ways to manage deeper patterns of habitual stress. The final piece of the jigsaw in addressing sleep and anxiety issues is falling into place as I complete my study in Hakomi which is a mindfulness based exploration of our core beliefs – essentially what makes us tick ‘and more importantly how to resolve the underlying anxieties which may be at the base of our tossing and turning instead of resting and restoring.’
This is now an essential piece of my one-to-one consultations and has made such a huge difference to many of my clients.
