What is Sound Healing?
Sound healing is a therapy form using different instruments and tones that vibrate at particular frequencies which allow the body to enter a mode of deep relaxation and gently bring the body back to its natural state of balance.
Healing with sound is believed to date as far back as 2500 years ago to ancient Greece when philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras was the first person to consider that music contributed greatly to our health if used in the right way.
It has been used as a tool for meditation in many cultures all over the world ever since.
The effects that sound has on us both physically and mentally are profound, music can change our mood in an instant, for example, if you can remember a time you were feeling down and listened to a song you loved on the radio and how that might have uplifted your mood or brought back a memory.
The body is like an orchestra with all the different parts (cells, organs, bones & muscles) having their own frequency. When healthy, all the parts are vibrating in perfect harmony together. If one system is affected due to physical or emotional causes and becomes out of tune, just like in an orchestra with one instrument sounding off that will affect everyone else who is playing too.
These imbalances cause energy blockages in that area, which in turn can stop your body from functioning at its optimal capacity.
Using singing bowls or other instruments such as gongs, tuning forks, chimes or drums around the body, these vibrational sounds work on slowing down the constant thinking in your head and move the mind into the alpha and theta brainwave state and this is the best state for your body to heal itself and come back to its natural state of harmony.
Our bodies are made up of over 70% water and sound vibrations travel 4 times quicker through water than through air, making sound a very effective way of shifting any blockages and increasing energy flow and rejuvenation. Sound vibrations still have benefits for people who have partial hearing loss or who are deaf as their body will still feel the vibrations of the sound.
Some of the benefits of sound healing include:
What happens at a sound healing treatment?
During a sound healing treatment the client simply just needs to lie down (fully clothed) close their eyes, relax and let the sound vibrations do all the work.
Tibetan bowls will be placed on particular parts of the body and struck gently a number of times while the practitioner listens to the vibrations to see if there are any blockages that may need to be released. Other instruments can be used during a session but not directly on the body including crystal bowls, gongs, rattles, chimes and drums.
About Emma
Hey, I’m Emma West,
I’m a Dublin gal, with a passion for sound, a frequent sea dipper, wife & mother to 3 children.
My love of sound comes from a very early age, which I inherited from my Dad, who was a radio DJ himself and I have many a childhood memory being brought to his work to and watching him in awe, having grown up with his turntables in my room, Music was just a natural way I found to express myself.
In primary & secondary school I loved being involved in all of the extra-musical shows or choirs, basically anything once it was music-based. I found it was a natural step for me to continue that love and passion of sound and follow my Dad’s footsteps of working in radio and club Djing in my 20’s.
Fast forward a few years and here I am, back doing something I love in a new form, which is Sound Healing Therapy by using sound vibrations such as Tibetan & crystal bowls, gongs, chimes & tuning forks that vibrate at particular frequencies to relax your mind and body & help bring the body back to a natural state of harmony.
