The Gut Stuff was co-founded just over a year ago by DJ presenters Lisa and Alana Macfarlane (The Mac Twins) and entrepreneur India Wardrop. Twins are a great constant for medical research, and Alana and Lisa became the “chief guinea pigs” for Tim Spector at TwinsUK research at King’s College London where they discovered that despite having 100% the same DNA their guts have only 40% the same microbiota, which could explain why their bodies behave so differently. Thus their ‘gut journey’ began!
The trio made it their mission to bring the real science to the public. They launched a Youtube series featuring the world’s leading scientists in Gut Health including Tim Spector, Trevor Lawley, Sandrine Claus and Fiona Powrie amongst other great scientists and set up www.thegutstuff.com – an accessible, fun online resource. They’re reaching out to empower the world with gut health through lots of creative channels such as their successful “pop up” Supper Club series featured as one of the “best things to do in London” in Time out and DesignMyNight — a unique experience in the health and wellness space, where science class meets communal dining.
Leveraging the founders’ creative talents, business acumen and connection to millennials, The Gut Stuff is changing the conversation around gut health. Alana and Lisa speak at the top health and wellness events as ‘headline’ acts including, in, The Edinburgh Wellness Festival, Warner Music, Stylist Live and retreats across the UK.
The website features a recipe series with Mucho and a free online “Ask a Nutritionist” resource with the UK’s top nutritionists such as Jeanette Hyde (author of “The Gut Makeover”) and Miguel Toribo Mateas (fellow of BANT). In the recently launched “De Juice” series they deduce scientific papers and teach the public how to read clinical studies and work out the “efficacy” of products and studies themselves in 3 minute video clips featured across the social channels.
With new products, a book on the way and everyone from the Telegraph to the Sun covering their journey, plus partners like Jones Knowles Ritchie and Revolt London jumping on board, and a recent successful takeover of Old Street station, they are sure to “gut” the word out there!
